Tiantong Temple was originally built in the Jin Dynasty and passed the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty, totaling over 1,700 years. Now the temple remains the structure of what it was in the Ming Dynasty and was ranked into key units of cultural relics protection in December, 1989. Guksa Modern eminent Buddhist monk Eight-finger Jing'an, Master Yuanying, Master Mingyi and Master Guangxiu ever lived here in succession. In 2004, Master Chengxin who has both ability and political integrity was invited here to be the abbot, and the ancient temple is reshined.
 
Situated at the foot of Taibai Mountain in the suburb of Ningbo City, Tiantong Temple, started in the Jin Dynasty and prospered in the Song and Ming Dynasty, is a key Taoist rites and one of the famous Five Mountains & Ten Temples. A large number of masters ever lived here for sermon and abbot. Tiantong Temple experienced several times of building and rebuilding but always inherited Zong Feng. After the Culture Revolution, its religion policy was carried out under the wise lead of the Party and the government and the ancient temple presented radiance again. It has made great contribution to the unity and prosperity of the nation, the civilization construction and the Buddha dharma promotion.
As invitation of provincial and municipal leaders and all the members of the temple and under the approval of China Buddhism Association, Master Chengxin came to Tiantong Temple in June 2004, and became the 163th abbot in Dec. 13th the year. Monk Chengxin, born in Wenzhou of Zhejiang, was graduated from the senior high school in 1977 and learned in Tiantong Temple from 1980. In 1981, he studied at Xiamen Minnan Buddhism College and then stayed in Xiamen after graduation as a graduate.
